Army looks to evolve talent management

Army Gen. James McConville has talent management top of mind. In particular, he wants the Army's new talent management system to focus on skills and career paths like cybersecurity that are not necessarily related to physical combat. “[W]e are going from an industrial age personnel management system to a 21st-century talent management system," he told reporters last week. Jackson Barnett reports.

Coast Guard makes good on 'tech revolution'

As part of its "tech revolution," the U.S. Coast Guard is making a major push to modernize its operations and systems. Adm. Karl Schultz, the commandant of the Coast Guard, said the guard is working to install Wi-Fi on its cutters to increase connectivity. On top of this, it is replacing old desktops in command posts with mobile “two-in-one tablets” that will give leaders the ability to work from anywhere. “In the past year, we’ve migrated to a cloud-based suite of collaboration tools and have increased the ability to connect our workforce, whether that be improved cutter connectivity both underway and in-port, or greatly enhanced telework capability,” the commandant said. White House wants to fix state vaccine websites

White House officials said Friday the administration will begin lending the federal government’s technological expertise to state and local governments that are still struggling to develop or maintain websites for making vaccination appointments, which have vexed people across the country. Cori Zarek, the executive director of the Beeck Center for Social Impact and Innovation at Georgetown University, said the offer is an example of the White House’s ability to help governments improve their digital services. “People are hungry for help and support,” she told StateScoop. “State and local governments have been asking for this skill and expertise for a very long time.” Benjamin Freed has more.

New Jersey says it closed the digital divide

The New Jersey Department of Education said yesterday that the state has entirely closed its digital divide among students, connecting every K-12 public school student with the devices and broadband necessary to participate in digital classrooms. As of March 3, New Jersey school district data reflected that zero kids lacked a computer or internet connection, down from a number that reached 7,000 as recently as January. Alicja Johnson, the communications manager of the Schools, Health, Library and Broadband Coalition, a nonprofit broadband advocacy group, called it a "phenomenal" accomplishment. Ryan Johnston reports.
