The Space Force started receiving its first cybersecurity personnel from other military services at the beginning of February. Most of those cyber personnel transitioning into the new force come from within the Department of the Air Force, which oversees the Space Force. In total, the force has brought in 2,400 of the 6,400 active duty cyber personnel it’s planning for, Gen. John Raymond, commanding general of the Space Force, told reporters last week. These Cyber Guardians — what members of the Space Force are called — will be protecting satellites from hacking and other space-based assets. “There’s a spectrum of threats that are out there. Everything from reversible jamming of satellites and GPS satellites, communication satellites, GPS satellites,” Raymond said. “And there’s cyber threats.” Jackson Barnett has the scoop.

Think tank plans to train state lawmakers in cybersecurity

The National Cybersecurity Center plans to offer training courses later this year to legislators and their staffs in every state. The training, which will cover cyber hygiene, threats and how cybersecurity affects the work state legislatures do, are “all about raising the awareness of cybersecurity,” said Forrest Senti, the director of business and government initiatives at the Colorado Springs, Colorado, research group. “The way we’re doing that is making sure they’re understanding the basics, as well as what cybersecurity really is,” he said. Coursera partners with Howard U., expands diversity catalog

The online learning platform Coursera announced last week a new partnership with Howard University, its first partnership with a historically Black university, along with a host of new course offerings and initiatives centered on diversity, equity and inclusion. Through the new deal, Howard University will build a “job-relevant” course catalog on the platform, starting with its information systems for business and linear algebra for data science specializations. Overloaded Kentucky unemployment agency missed 400,000 emails in 2020

As COVID-19 forced businesses to close their doors and people to lose their jobs en masse in early 2020, the Kentucky Office of Unemployment Insurance ignored 400,000 emails from laid-off workers, and illegally auto-paid claimants the minimum weekly amount, according to an audit published Tuesday. Writing that the unemployment office was facing pressure to “override system controls" during the early days of the pandemic, Kentucky Auditor Mike Harmon wrote that he’s unable to estimate how much the state either overpaid or underpaid jobless residents.
