Facing budget shortfalls, cities begin furloughing tech workers

The economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic have been looming for most of its duration, but now, in the absence of federal aid, drastic budget cuts and furloughs for city government IT staffs are imminent. Thousands of cities throughout the country are facing budget deficits due to decreases in revenue. New York, Denver and Los Angeles have all announced that thousands of employees — including technology officials and workers — will be furloughed for periods over the next several months.
