USAJOBS aims to provide applicants with better job updates

The Office of Personnel Management gave WorkScoop an inside look at what it has planned in 2020 for the USAJOBS program. Namely, OPM wants to improve applicants’ visibility into the federal hiring process by providing job status updates within its portal starting this fiscal year. The agency hopes the updates will help with a compounded problem set that it faces in managing federal hiring through USAJOBS: Many jobs posted on the site go without selections being made — in part because applicants overestimate their skills when asked to self-assess. And on top of that, the competition for open jobs is fierce: The system sees 18 million applications started annually for about 350,000 announced positions. Data from the talent acquisition system USA Staffing showed only 340,000 selections made out of 1.3 million applications processed, a mere 3 percent. Dave Nyczepir has the story.

‘30 percent’ of Illinois state IT workforce eligible to retire

The state of Illinois faces a common challenge in that a large percentage of its workforce could soon retire, leaving the state to fend for itself as it manages legacy IT systems running on obscure programming languages. CIO Ron Guerrier recently spoke with sister publication StateScoop about this issue. “Thirty percent of my workforce is eligible for retirement soon,” Guerrier said in a recent video interview. “So I’m looking to make sure that I actually feed the pipeline through increasing our STEM efforts, partnering with local universities and community colleges and creating a degree program that actually brings you into an apprentice job within the state of Illinois.” Listen to Guerrier's interview.
