The federal government is being invaded by CDOs

The Office of Management and Budget issued guidance last week informing agencies how to interpret and implement the<span style="color: #4c4c4c; font-family: 'Fira Sans', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 20px;"> </span>Foundations for Evidence-Based Policymaking Act. The law requires that every federal agency have a chief data officer — a vague title that could vary from agency to agency. The OMB guidance sets out some defining characteristics of the role, as well as information on developing “Learning Agendas” and strategic planning around better use and management of data. Wanna be a CXO fellow?

The CXO Fellowship program is accepting applications for its latest cohort through Aug. 9. The program is aimed at retaining federal workers in information technology, acquisitions, human capital, and finance roles. A fellow can be any mid-level employee — typically General Schedule 9 to 13 — nominated by their supervisor for their leadership potential and approved by their respective department head. Cybersecurity clinic at Indiana U. positions itself as regional hub

Indiana University Bloomington announced plans last week to open a clinic that its organizers say “will serve as a cyber hub for the Midwest.” The clinic will partner students from IU’s Kelley School of Business, the Maurer School of Law, and the School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering, along with state and local government agencies, not-for-profit organizations and small businesses to address issues such as cyberattacks, intellectual property protection and data privacy. Betsy Foresman has the scoop.


It's all in the parentheses

A new memo released from the Office of Personnel Management aims to help federal agencies hire more data scientists. The memo gives agencies the go-ahead to add the parenthetical (Data Scientist) next to the official title for a variety of job listings. Tajha breaks it down.
