The newest cohort of Presidential Innovation Fellows goes virtual
The General Services Administration recently announced a new cohort of 34 Presidential Innovation Fellows for 2021. The group is unprecedented for a number of reasons, according to GSA: It's the most diverse yet, and the fellows — many of whom will focus on artificial intelligence applications in government — will work virtually amid the ongoing pandemic. During a one-year “tour of duty,” the PIFs — private sector data scientists, engineers, designers, and entrepreneurs — will assist 22 agencies by bringing technology and innovation to problems of “national priority." Read more on the new PIFs.

All-in on a virtual classroom
When Sean Willems, who teaches operations management and supply chain analytics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, heard classes were going online this year, he decided to go all in. He spent most of his May and a few days in June converting a room in his house into a semi-professional video recording studio. More than 300 hours of work later, he'd developed the most sophisticated home set-up used by a university professor today. In an interview with EdScoop, he detailed the extensive project and admitted that while both he and his students appreciate what the studio can do, it still doesn't live up to the experience of an in-person education. Colin Wood has the story.

AI Caucus wants to help educate Congress
The Congressional Artificial Intelligence Caucus wants to help build support for much-needed AI legislation by educating members and their staff on the technology. Leaders of the caucus said late last week it is working with relevant congressional committees and the National Institute of Standards and Technology to develop a common language around AI to better help members of Congress understand issues such as the need to minimize bias in AI and develop a privacy program that help the U.S. outcompete China globally. More from Dave Nyczepir.
