Google launches courses on Coursera

Google is working with Coursera to break barriers for underserved groups to enter the tech workforce, the company announced Monday. Google developed three new career certificate programs for the online education platform focused on data analytics, project management and user experience design and taught by Google employees. The certificates follow the mold of the popular Google IT Cert program, which aims to prepare participants for entry-level IT jobs in six months. Jake Williams has the scoop.

The Navy wants to use wearable tech to fight spread of COVID-19

The Navy has battled major outbreaks of COVID-19 on its ships. Now, to fight the spread of the virus among its sailors, the service is considering using wearable technology to help track the proximity of sailors to one another. The Navy issued a request for information seeking commercially available proximity tracking technology based on wearables that continuously measure the distance between themselves and others nearby. Those devices will then be connected to a processing station that will upload their proximity data to “calculate the total time and at what distance two individuals with the wearables have been in close contact,” says the RFI. Florida International University hosts webinar for K-12 online learning

The university announced plans this week to host a series targeted at K-12 educators to teach them best practices as learning is expected to remain online for many districts into the fall. The webinars will cover topics including lesson designs and use of videos, as well as organization techniques and other tools, according to the university. Betsy Foresman has this one.


Virginia Tech launches online coding, cybersecurity bootcamps
