DARPA wants to build AI that can be a true teammate

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency recently kicked off a new research project called Artificial Social Intelligence for Successful Teams (ASIST), which now holds the goal of figuring out how to imbue machines with social intelligence. Not any type of social intelligence, though, but the kind that makes for a good teammate. Joshua Elliott, who leads the project for DARPA, said the concept of human and machine teaming is an emerging field of study with huge potential — but social intelligence is the missing piece of the puzzle.
